Winter Gardening Tips for the Hudson Valley

Our Massive Garden Center is Stocked with Mums and Fall Decorations

Don’t let the occasional warm spell fool you, we’re still in the middle of winter in the Lower Hudson Valley. You need to make sure your plants are well tended now, so they’re ready to bloom when Spring actually arrives.

Here are some winter gardening tips for the Hudson Valley:

    1. Protect delicate plants: Cover frost-sensitive plants with blankets, burlap, or frost cloth to protect them from harsh winter winds.
    2. Mulch: Apply a thick layer of mulch around plants to help maintain soil moisture and protect roots from freezing.
    3. Water wisely: Water plants thoroughly before the ground freezes to ensure that the soil stays hydrated throughout the winter.
    4. Prune shrubs and trees: Prune shrubs and trees in late winter, before new growth begins.
    5. Monitor pests: Keep an eye out for pests, such as rodents and rabbits, that may be attracted to your plants in the winter.
    6. Protect your soil: Use cover crops or a layer of compost to help build and protect your soil during the winter months.
    7. Plan for spring: Use the winter months to plan your garden, make changes to your garden beds, and order new plants.
    8. Keep an eye on the weather: Be prepared to cover delicate plants or bring potted plants indoors if a cold snap is expected.

Remember, it is important to always research the specific needs of the plants you have in your garden and adjust these tips accordingly.
